There has been a discussion recently on my Car Wars message board about the content and format of new Car Wars sets, games that would be intended for novice and retired veteran autoduelists. Ideas have included plastic videocassette boxes, omission of vehicle design rules, new arenas and new vehicle designs. If any were new Car Wars games were to be produced, should they be in 1.5X (Micro Machines) scale or 3X (Hot Wheels/Matchbox) scale? Should new Car Wars games be compatible with 1.5X or 3X miniatures? The only 1X scale miniatures available are Formula Racers from Khalsa Brain Games, Formula De Pewter Cars and the plastic cars included with each copy of Formula De. Would new Car Wars games with the traditional cardstock counters be acceptible if you could use Micro Machines or Hot Wheels with the games? Would Car Wars games with 1X scale maps and cardstock counters succeed in the marketplace if the rules were well-written, vehicle designs carefully constructed, and the graphic design of the entire set was excellent, or are 3-D materials required for any science fiction/military board game played today? or are 3-D materials required for any science fiction/military board game played today? No.  But it would be nice if you could get some very basic plastic cars together.  A single VCR-sized sprue with each of the basic Car and Cycle chassis could be done pretty cheaply in 1X.  A second VCR-sized sprue with each of the Trikes, Trucks, and Trailers could also be done at reasonable cost in 1X.  If there's demand, Helicopters and Hovercraft.  Tho I don't know if Tanks and Boats would ever work.  Put 2 sprues in each VCR clamshell or 3-4 sprues in a plastic bag.  I know I'd get a bunch of these if they ever came out. Considering the recently-released 3rd party Risk expansion set was done in plastic, the Car Wars plastics could certainly be done in similar _style_ and at similar cost. If you go 1.5X or 3X, you won't sell any Cars, as Hot Wheels and Micro Machines are likely to be far more cost-efficient.

Vehicle design is one of the facets of the game that I love. I haven't played in years, but I at least get the urge every now and again, and without vehicle design I'd probably never buy another new product. David remove deadspam to reply by e-mail

Would Car Wars games with 1X scale maps and cardstock counters succeed in the marketplace if the rules were well-written, vehicle designs carefully constructed, and the graphic design of the entire set was excellent, or are 3-D materials required for any science fiction/military board game played today? The basic release should not presume 3D materials, but should be designed with their addition in mind. It might be best to abstract the game mechanics from the materials. For example, use a _base_ size as 2 map = 10 meters. Print the rules referring to meters (cars move 5 meters per phase, range is 30 meters, etc.). Assume that people are using the basic scale, but provide an appendix (only a page should be necessary) and turning key for additional scales (and explain what uses that scale; hot wheels, HO, etc.).
